HEADLINE CONTEST
Division IV winner
Newspapers with circulations of 50,000 or less ($500 in cash and an engraved plaque)
Winner: Gary Housey, West Paterson (N.J.) Herald News
Judges: John Russial (chairman), University of Oregon; Peggy Bocox, Monterey County (Calif.) Herald; Jim Lexa, Amarillo (Texas) Globe-News; Michael Roehrman, The Wichita Eagle
Judges’ comments:
- Housey’s headlines exhibited a great deal of creativity and flair. Some took off in a different direction – they zigged where others might have zagged, but they worked very well on a range of story types. As a whole, they connected quite well with the photos and with the other elements of display type.
